Battling California’s Dangerous Wildfires Requires Mutual Efforts

On Friday, June 24, 2016 the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) activated the State Operations Center to coordinate a statewide response to the Erskine Fire currently burning in Kern County. That same day, Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. declared a state of emergency for the county due to the severity of the incident.

More than 43,000 acres have burned so far near the Lake Isabella area, claiming multiple lives, requiring evacuations of residents, destroying 220 structures and threatening an additional 2,500 structures. As of today, with the fire at 40% containment, there are currently over 1,700 men and women fighting this blaze.

Cal OES has responded to this incident by dispatching resources utilizing the California Mutual Aid System. A system created to provide mobilization, organization and operation of fire resources to mitigate the effects of fires. [pullquote align=”right” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“Battling big wildfires in California depends on hard work and dedication by many of the local firefighters in your own back yard,” explains Deputy Director of Crisis Communications Kelly Huston. “It’s neighbor helping neighbor, as part of the nation’s most effective mutual aid system.”[/pullquote]

Cal OES Fire and Rescue Division has dispatched 34 individual engines, as well as 20 local government strike teams comprised of 100 fire engines. A strike team consist of 5 engines, Cal OES or locally owned, and a command vehicle.

An additional 458 specially trained firefighters from every corner of the state are helping Kern County get a handle on this blaze. Below lists all the Mutual Aid agencies or departments that have been assisting with the Erskine firefighting effort:
