Get Prepared, Enjoy Family Fun at Prep Day

Are you prepared for the next disaster? In 2017 alone, Californians have already endured a historic drought, flooding, more than 3,000 wildfires and numerous earthquakes, among other emergencies.

When it comes to disasters, California truly is the Wild West.

One month from today, historic Old Sacramento will transform into the 12th annual California Day of Preparedness, otherwise referred to as “Surviving the Wild West”. The one-day, family-friendly event – located on the 1849 Scene near the Railroad Museum – is scheduled for Saturday, August 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Admission is free.

Attendees will learn about emergency preparedness as well as experience a variety of disaster readiness demonstrations including a mobile earthquake simulator, watch water rescues, and witness the skills of search and rescue dogs in … continue reading »

Any month of the year is a good time to prepare but September gets special recognition to remind everyone to take steps to be ready for the next disaster or emergency. When we think of emergency preparedness we usually make plans for ourselves, our family and our neighbors. But we need to remember our other important members of the family…our pets.

Preparing your pet before, during and after an emergency is very similar to preparing ourselves. One of the most important steps of pet emergency preparedness is to have a plan. Taking into account the type of animal you have, the risks your household are vulnerable to and your pet’s needs is a great starting place to building your pet emergency preparedness plan.

Today, thousands of Californians are a step closer to being ready for the next disaster. With historic Old Sacramento as the setting, the California Day of Preparedness welcomed the community to learn about disaster preparedness and also have a little fun.

The event featured more than 40 state and local agencies, public safety departments, and non-profit organizations and showcased interactive activities, the opportunity to meet first responders, and live demonstrations. A 9-1-1 Heroes ceremony was held to honor local youth and dispatchers for heroic efforts during an emergency.

Learn How to ‘Survive the Wild West’ at California Day of Preparedness

This year’s destructive wildfires, the constant threat of a major earthquake and a lingering historic drought in California emphasizes the importance of emergency preparedness. Although Californians are seemingly accustomed to natural disasters and extreme events, it is critical that individuals, families and communities stay prepared and informed on how to react for the next disaster.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is doing its part to ensure that the public is educated by hosting the 11th annual California Day of Preparedness on Saturday in Old Sacramento.

Cal OES Hosts California Day of Preparedness Event “Be a Force – Take Action”

Over 3,000 Californians attended the 6th annual California Day of Preparedness event in Historic Old Sacramento on Saturday, September 6th where visitors enjoyed a variety of disaster readiness demonstrations including a mobile earthquake simulator – sponsored by Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and the California Utilities Emergency Association (CUEA), which allowed participants to experience the magnitude of the recent 6.0 Napa Earthquake.
