Civil Trial Unfolds Over Tragic Death of 14-Year-Old Girl in LAPD Shooting

Civil Trial Begins

A civil trial has commenced surrounding the heartbreaking case of a 14-year-old girl who lost her life due to a shooting incident involving the LAPD. The trial is taking place in Los Angeles Superior Court, where the family of Valentina Orellana-Peralta seeks justice for her wrongful death.

Details of the Incident

On December 23, 2021, Valentina was shopping for Christmas gifts with her mother at a Burlington store in North Hollywood when a tragic event unfolded. During the police response to a chaotic situation involving a man attacking two women with a bike lock, shots were fired. Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr. discharged his rifle multiple times, resulting in the death of both the suspect and Valentina, who was struck by a stray bullet that penetrated the dressing room wall.

The lawsuit filed by Valentina’s parents claims wrongful death, negligence, and emotional distress caused by the incident. It recounts a heart-wrenching moment when Valentina’s mother, Soledad Peralta, realized her daughter had been hit and watched helplessly as she died in her arms.

The plaintiffs argue that the LAPD did not provide adequate training or supervision for the responding officers and that the department’s policies contributed to this tragic outcome. “You don’t bring an AR-15 to a bike lock fight,” asserted attorney Nick Rowley, representing the family, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

In the courtroom, visuals included a wooden replica of the rifle used during the shooting while body camera footage was played, showcasing the confusion and panic that occurred prior to the gunfire. Following the incident, an internal police commission found aspects of the shooting to be against department policy. Despite this, the California Department of Justice has opted not to pursue criminal charges against the involved officers.

The family is pursuing $100 million in damages. Attorneys representing the city are anticipated to present their opening statements in the coming days, while the LAPD has refrained from commenting on the matter due to ongoing litigation.
