Surrogacy Operation Under Fire
A recent court hearing has unveiled shocking allegations against a couple accused of turning their Arcadia home into a nightmarish environment for more than a dozen surrogate children. Prosecutors allege that Guojun Xuan, 66, and Silvia Zhang, 39, not only kept their children in deplorable conditions but also fled the country during previous child abuse investigations.
Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney MacKenzie Teymouri revealed that the couple limited their children’s exposure to the outside world, keeping them confined for years with little sunlight. Disturbingly, police discovered the remains of a deceased surrogate baby that had been mailed to the couple’s home from Florida, which they purportedly never opened.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
During the hearing, Xuan and Zhang’s attorneys sought their clients’ release, but Judge Caroline Lugo responded by imposing a staggering $20 million bail, while prosecutors argued for an even higher amount due to the couple’s significant financial resources.
Since their arrest, the couple has faced multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit child abuse. Prosecutors allege that they instructed nannies to administer harsh punishments for minor misbehavior, leading to widespread physical abuse recorded by security cameras within the house over a ten-day period.
Although Zhang has previously faced child abuse allegations for leaving her daughter in a hot car, both she and her partner have pleaded not guilty to current charges. Their legal representation argues that they are victims of a societal bias against them.
Furthermore, the Department of Children and Family Services had fielded multiple complaints about the couple from 2019 to 2025 but did not act until last year, raising questions about the oversight and welfare of the children during that time.
According to Teymouri, the children were isolated from typical childhood experiences, learning subjects like mathematics and language in makeshift classroom settings filled with intimidation and fear.
The court case highlights troubling systemic issues, as the children were reported to have been terrified of parks and other outdoor settings after they were finally taken into custody. They had witnessed extensive violence in their home, adding another layer of trauma to their already troubled lives.
As the legal proceedings continue, the community watches closely, hoping for justice and the well-being of those affected by this heartbreaking situation.
