A rapid response from local residents turned a potentially tragic situation into one of heroism when an elderly care facility in Glendale was engulfed in flames, prompting a valiant rescue effort late Friday afternoon.
The Blaze Erupts
Shortly before 5 p.m., a fire erupted at the assisted living home located near Mountain Street and Allen Avenue. The chaotic scene was captured in dramatic footage showing both neighbors and first responders rushing to help evacuate residents as thick smoke and flames consumed the building.
At the time of the incident, two nurses and six elderly patients were inside the facility. The quick action of those nearby made a critical difference, with multiple residents requiring assistance to escape the rapidly deteriorating conditions.
Local Heroes Step Up
Among the courageous bystanders were siblings Alex and Narek Bazinyan, who leaped into action upon witnessing a nurse struggling to exit the home. Alex recounted the urgency of the moment, stating, “We saw the nurse coming out of the house and she was yelling for help, and then after that we just ran inside.” He quickly realized that elderly residents were in serious distress and began carrying them out one by one.
As firefighters worked diligently to control the blaze, which had severely damaged the structure and partially collapsed the roof, the brothers’ efforts, alongside those of other neighbors, helped ensure that the most vulnerable got the help they needed.
In the aftermath, all seven individuals—including patients and a neighbor who assisted—were transported to a hospital as a precaution. Thankfully, reports confirmed that everyone is expected to recover from the ordeal.
Investigators are currently examining the cause of the fire, while state records indicate that the home’s smoke detectors had passed inspection just months prior, suggesting they were working correctly at the time.
