The celebration unfolded from 6 p.m. until midnight, allowing guests to indulge in the beloved sandwich at a staggering discount from its usual $22 price tag. As the hours ticked by, staff members worked tirelessly inside the deli, assembling sandwiches while a line of enthusiastic customers formed outside, winding down the block.
Mark Canter, the owner and grandson of the deli’s founder, shared his thoughts on the occasion, saying, “It’s a special moment for Canter’s Deli. You take a bite, you’re kind of hooked.” His family legacy is evident here, as Canter’s Deli stands strong as one of America’s oldest sandwich spots, ingrained in local culture.
Canter observed, “Canter’s is a place where grandkids grow up and bring their grandkids. I’ve seen people in their late 80s tell me they had their first birthday party here.” The deli is adorned with photos that narrate its long journey on Fairfax Avenue, maintaining its classic charm through decades of change.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of the evening, the excitement only intensified. Judy Diamond, a delightful 84-year-old from Northridge, was among the first customers, admitting she waited three hours in line. “It’s fun, and it’s part of the history of Los Angeles. Why not celebrate something that’s been here longer than I have?” she remarked.
Other patrons echoed her sentiments, with Irene Eason from Santa Monica proudly wearing her vintage Canter’s shirt. “The history, the warmth, the community — it’s just a good feeling to be here,” Eason expressed with a smile. Gilbert Fajardo, who made a trip from the San Fernando Valley, laughed as he relished the experience, stating, “It’s a reason they’ve been here for 95 years.
