Charges Filed Against Suspect in Tragic Canoga Park Shooting

Tragic Shooting Claims Lives

A suspect has been charged with murder following a heartbreaking incident in Canoga Park that left a pregnant mother and her unborn child dead. The man, identified as Walter Francisco Rodriguez Garcia, 32, of Gardena, is accused of shooting Adriana Jimenez, 22, while she sat in a car with her sister.

On August 23, Jimenez, who was 16 weeks pregnant and already a mother to a 6-year-old girl, was critically injured by the gunfire. Tragically, her family shared that she was declared brain dead after the attack. With heavy hearts, they confirmed she was taken off life support shortly after the shooting.

In the altercation, Jimenez’s older sister, Maria Fernanda Jimenez, 24, sustained serious injuries but is expected to recover. Prosecutors have amended their felony complaint against Garcia to include murder charges for both Adriana and her unborn child.

Details Surrounding the Incident

Shortly following the shooting, Garcia was arrested and initially charged with three counts of attempted murder, which included allegations of him personally firing a weapon. He pleaded not guilty to these charges. The updated complaint reflects the gravity of the situation, and Garcia has yet to respond to the new allegations in court.

Leonardo Ayala, the uncle of Adriana and Maria, expressed relief at the news of the charges, emphasizing the need for justice for his niece. He recounted that on the night of the shooting, the sisters had just wrapped up their work as cooks at a local Thai restaurant and decided to meet up with cousins and Adriana’s boyfriend, who was the father of her baby.

According to LAPD reports, the shooting took place in an alley near their apartment shortly before 8 a.m. while the sisters were waiting in their parked car. It is believed that Garcia, who was previously in a relationship with one of their cousins, attempted to shoot Jimenez’s boyfriend as well; however, the motive remains unclear.

Ayala expressed his confusion and pain over the violent act, stating, “It’s all very maddening. I’ll never understand why he did what he did.” Heartbreakingly, this tragic incident occurred just days before Jimenez was set to celebrate her 23rd birthday and host a gender reveal party.
