Tribute to Lives Lost
A devastating series of events in Chatsworth has left the community in mourning, as residents come together to remember the victims of two tragic crashes that occurred on Tuesday.
The first incident involved an NBC4 helicopter crashing while its crew was covering an earlier accident nearby, where a woman drove her SUV into a Metro bus. The collision had already claimed lives, and the unfolding tragedy took a turn that deeply affected the entire community.
Three individuals died in the helicopter crash, while two others lost their lives in the bus collision. At Whiteman Airport, where the NBC4 crew frequently operated, mourners gathered to lay flowers, candles, and heartfelt messages in memory of reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw. One touching note stated, “Eliana and George, fly high,” encapsulating the sentiments of those present.
As Anthony Sarabia, a local resident, poignantly remarked, remembering their legacies is crucial in times like these. “It’s bittersweet. It hurts that we are gathering for this, but it also brings joy because we know the impact she had on Angelenos and the people that watched her probably across the country,” he shared.
Among the victims was 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia, who was on the ground when the helicopter fell. Having just arrived in Los Angeles to visit family, he and his loved ones were faced with the unimaginable loss.
Community Vigil and Remembrance
The victims of both crashes were honored at a vigil at St. John Eudes Parish on Thursday evening, where hundreds gathered to light candles and share stories. Family, friends, and community members expressed their grief over the loss of five lives.
Autumn Reiff, mourning the loss of her boyfriend Gage Weida, spoke of the profound emptiness left by his passing. “He was everything, he was everything,” she said, remembering how he was on his way to work at Buffalo Wild Wings when the accident occurred.
Weida was described by his friends as patient and kind, a sentiment echoed by those who knew him. Another vigil participant shared the immense love felt by the family of Daniel Castillo, aged 46. His relative, Francis Sandoval, conveyed how important family was to Castillo, who never made it home after his bus ride.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass attended the vigil and expressed her condolences, stating, “It’s just such a tragedy and I just want the families to know that the entire city grieves with them.” A community united in sorrow, they remembered the lives lost, and committed to keeping their memory alive.
The helicopter accident unfolded along Mason Avenue at 7 p.m., crashing between two commercial buildings. NBC4 confirmed the identity of the aircraft involved shortly after the tragedy. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the accident, emphasizing that video footage from the helicopter will be essential for analyzing the events leading to the crash.
NTSB Investigator Fabian Salazar noted the importance of the recording, which captured sounds consistent with engine issues just before the crash. Investigators are diligently collecting evidence at the crash site and appealing to the public for any information related to the incident.
