Unexpected Downpour Causes Mudslide
A sudden downpour in San Bernardino County has resulted in a mudslide, leading to the closure of several roads in the area. The heavy rain, which reached about 2 inches in places like Oak Glen, caught many residents off guard, highlighting the risks in regions recently affected by wildfires.
Road Closures and Safety Warnings
The mudslide occurred alongside a flash flood warning that remained in effect until Thursday evening. Meteorologist Stephanie Sullivan from the National Weather Service in San Diego stated that the rainfall was due to a monsoon pattern, distinct from the hurricanes that might send swells to the California coast.
Roads including Valley of the Falls Drive, Oak Glen Road, and Potato Canyon Road have been shut down as a result of the debris flow, with local authorities urging residents to stay clear of the area. The Yucaipa Police Department announced these closures, indicating they would be in effect for an indefinite period.
Fortunately, according to Gloria Orejel from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, there has been no immediate threat to homes or residents as a result of the mudslide. However, the National Weather Service has warned about the potential for life-threatening flash floods, advising anyone driving in the region to avoid flooded roads and consider alternate routes to ensure their safety.
