A significant incident unfolded in the Hollywood Hills when a pool overflow led to the partial collapse of a hillside on Friday afternoon. The Los Angeles Fire Department was dispatched to the scene following reports of flooding and structural failure on North Wilcox Avenue.
Evacuations and Emergency Response
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that eight units of an apartment complex situated on Grace Avenue above the affected hillside had to be evacuated. Local authorities were unable to confirm the exact number of individuals impacted by this sudden emergency, as the Los Angeles Police Department took charge of managing evacuees.
By around 5 p.m., the Fire Department assessed the situation, stating that the collapse was deemed ‘static.’ This classification indicated that no further changes in the hillside were expected, allowing all evacuated residents to safely return to their homes.
Cause and Aftermath of the Incident
The source of the trouble was traced to a garden hose that had been overflowing into the pool for an unspecified duration, ultimately leading to the flooding and hillside collapse. In response, the Fire Department drained the pool, which subsequently received a red tag from the L.A. Department of Building and Safety, indicating that it posed a potential hazard.
Additionally, portions of a vacated commercial building at the base of the hill were also marked as unsafe by the building department due to the incident. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries related to this event, allowing residents to breathe a sigh of relief amidst the chaos.
