Jackie’s Journey Concludes
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the cherished bald eagle from Big Bear, Jackie, has passed away after receiving extensive medical care for over three weeks. Wildlife enthusiasts and residents alike had rallied around her, hoping for her recovery, but ultimately, her journey ended at the Ojai Raptor Center.
A Path to Preservation
Following her demise, officials from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) have announced that Jackie’s remains will be sent to the National Eagle Repository, where they will be cared for in accordance with Native American traditions. This repository, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, plays an essential role in preserving bald eagle parts for cultural and ceremonial purposes, as well as educational initiatives aimed at conservation.
Veterinary pathologists from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance will conduct a comprehensive necropsy to determine the specifics surrounding her passing. It is crucial to note that while severe anemia and blood clots were identified in her condition, the precise cause of her decline is still under investigation, with tests underway as of her passing.
Jackie first caught public attention on July 18, when she was rescued after being grounded due to a confrontation with two younger eagles. Initial examinations revealed her to be underweight and suffering from severe health issues. Despite the best efforts of her caretakers, which included blood transfusions and constant monitoring, her health continued to worsen, leading to her untimely death.
The outpouring of grief and support from the community has been immense. Governor Gavin Newsom expressed the collective sorrow of Californians, highlighting the bond many felt with Jackie through her story and encouraging greater care for wildlife and their habitats. CDFW Director Meghan Hertel reflected on the deep impact Jackie had on raising awareness for conservation efforts.
