Narrow Escape on the Freeway
A police officer in Irwindale experienced a harrowing moment when a pickup truck collided with his patrol vehicle during a traffic stop on the 605 Freeway. The incident unfolded in the early hours of July 23, around 4 a.m., as the officer pulled over a speeding driver.
Both the officer and the stopped driver were safely parked on the shoulder when the unexpected crash occurred. After engaging with the driver, the officer returned to his patrol car to issue a citation. Just as he was occupied with his paperwork, the pickup truck crashed into his vehicle with significant force, causing a domino effect that pushed the patrol car into the other driver’s car.
Impact Caught on Camera
Footage from the police department revealed the dramatic moment of impact. The video shows debris scattering in the air as the pickup slammed into the patrol car, highlighting the perilous nature of the situation.
Fortunately, the officer sustained only minor injuries, including cuts to his face from shattered glass, and he was back on duty the following night. The driver of the other vehicle reported experiencing head and neck discomfort in the aftermath of the crash. Thankfully, the driver of the pickup truck emerged unscathed, claiming he had dozed off behind the wheel.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drowsy driving. Police emphasized the importance of staying alert behind the wheel, urging drivers who feel fatigued to pull over and rest. As they aptly put it, “A few seconds of sleep behind the wheel can change everything.”
