Health Update on Jackie the Eagle
Despite showing persistent anemia in her recent bloodwork, Jackie, the cherished bald eagle from Big Bear, is making strides in her recovery at the Ojai Raptor Center. The latest updates revealed that her packed cell volume (PCV), an indicator of red blood cells in her system, has risen to 17%. While it’s encouraging news, veterinary staff are aiming for a PCV level exceeding 30% for her optimal health.
Executive Director Chris Eksteen from the Ojai Raptor Center detailed the ongoing plan for Jackie’s recovery. “We are closely monitoring her blood and white cell counts and conducting specialized tests to check for heavy metal toxicosis, but results won’t be available for several weeks. We’ll also be assessing her lungs with radiographs and plan to do a CT scan once her PCV improves further,” he shared. Eksteen also noted that Jackie’s recovery could span weeks or even months.
Jackie’s elevated white cell count suggests she is reacting to some form of stress or possible infection, and while there has been progress, many questions remain unanswered about her complex condition.
What Happens to Shadow?
During Jackie’s healing process, Shadow, her devoted partner, has been keeping vigil, caring for their two eaglets, Sandy and Luna, who have now taken flight and are no longer visible on camera since July 23. The Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) stated, “While we can’t be certain, it seems the eaglets have left the area. Here’s to a safe journey ahead for Sandy and Luna; thank you for allowing us to witness your growth!” This segment of time has been referred to as Shadow’s “summer vacation,” as he enjoys his days around the habitat.
Although there was some concern among followers that Shadow might seek out another mate after the arrival of a young subadult eagle, experts, including Dr. Peter Sharpe, believe the newcomer is not yet ready for mating. Bald eagles typically reach maturity around five years, so this young eagle, estimated to be about 3.5 years old, is unlikely to be seeking a mate at this time.
In recent updates, FOBBV reassured supporters that Shadow remains loyal to Jackie and their territory. “He might choose to remain devoted to her memory, find a new companion, or even depart from the area. For now, we can only watch and hope for the best outcome,” they remarked.
Looking Ahead for Jackie
The veterinary team at the Ojai Raptor Center is diligently working to uncover the root cause of Jackie’s health issues. A recent social media post showcased her remarkable transition from being fed with restraint to eating independently, showcasing her returning energy and alert demeanor. The footage included clips of her blood transfusion, along with moments of her showing personality by vocalizing and expressing feistiness during feedings.
Although the medical team continues to give their all, a definitive diagnosis has yet to be established. Once fully rehabilitated, plans are in place to return Jackie to her home in Big Bear, close to her nest. The community remains hopeful and supportive as they follow her recovery journey.
