After enduring 104 days in the hospital due to severe burns from a devastating house fire, 13-year-old King El-Asar is finally home and on the path to recovery. His battle is far from over, as he not only suffered significant injuries but is also facing the challenges of rehabilitation to reclaim his life and passion for basketball.
The Fire and Its Aftermath
King experienced third-degree burns covering half of his body in an accident that shook his family to the core. His mother, Michelle Franco, recounted the terrifying moment, describing how he was engulfed in flames with no clear source in sight. “Seeing your child in that condition is every parent’s nightmare. I never anticipated seeing him so injured, wrapped in bandages, almost unrecognizable,” she shared.
As King begins his recovery at home, he reflects on the painful aspect of treatment. “The wound care is tough; they use this soft cloth towel, but against my skin, it feels like needles,” he explained, highlighting the resilience he has built during this arduous journey.
The Road Ahead
King’s mother, a former USC basketball player who now coaches internationally, has been a crucial support system throughout this ordeal. Together, they channel their love for basketball to foster hope and strength. “We’re just at the start, like the first quarter of a game. We need to push through this together,” Michelle said, her determination evident as she aims to help King through to the end.
As King embarks on his rehabilitation journey, financial support is essential. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with the costs not covered by insurance. This heartfelt effort invites the community to join in aiding King on his long road to recovery.
