In a significant police operation on Sunday, law enforcement officers intervened to prevent a planned takeover by a large group of minibike riders on the 6th Street Bridge. More than 70 young individuals, mostly minors, were cited for operating their motorized bikes in an unauthorized manner, prompting swift action from the LAPD.
According to a statement from Sergeant Robert Leary of the LAPD Street Racing Task Force, the riders were seen blocking the bridge, performing stunts like doughnuts and wheelies, and riding improperly through traffic. To address this situation, police had gathered intelligence on their plans and mobilized teams to effectively surround the group.
Police Response and Outcomes
Once cornered, officers apprehended the riders without any major incidents. Each violator was issued citations for riding illegal vehicles on city streets. Given that a significant portion of the group was underage, officers ensured that their parents were notified and came to collect their children from the scene.
In total, 78 minibikes and pocket bikes were confiscated during this operation. Footage from local news outlets showed the police presence on the bridge, where many young riders were lined up and had their hands restrained, while tow trucks worked to remove the impounded bikes. Alongside these arrests, authorities also seized two vehicles belonging to individuals assisting the riders.
Ongoing Monitoring of Minibike Activities
LAPD Deputy Chief German Hurtado revealed that the police had been closely monitoring this group due to their history of illegal minibike activities. “We followed their movements until we were able to safely intervene,” said Hurtado. The operation also involved collaboration with the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
It’s crucial to note that minibikes do not adhere to the safety regulations set by the Department of Motor Vehicles and are consequently banned from being ridden on public streets and sidewalks in California. Their use is limited to private property only with the owner’s permission, emphasizing the need for public awareness regarding these regulations.
