A swarm of small earthquakes has caused a stir among residents in the communities of Lennox and Westmont. Over the course of Friday night into Saturday, these micro-quakes generated noticeable tremors, prompting concern among locals.

Understanding the Earthquakes

The United States Geological Survey documented a staggering 90 micro-quakes in the area. These tremors, which ranged in magnitude from 1.0 to 2.7, were active from 8:05 p.m. on Friday until 2:30 p.m. the following day. Most of this seismic activity was centered around the Newport-Inglewood Fault Zone, a known strike-slip fault that extends from Culver City all the way to Newport Beach.

A study conducted in 2017 revealed that this fault may pose greater risks than previously understood, suggesting that historical earthquakes could have reached magnitudes as high as 7.5. Such powerful quakes were said to have significantly impacted nearby areas, including Seal Beach.

Community Reactions and Safety Insights

Last week, a magnitude 3.2 earthquake also shook the same fault zone near Compton, adding to the unease in the surrounding neighborhoods. Reports from residents in varied areas—ranging from Crenshaw to Huntington Park—indicated that many felt the tremors and took to social media to discuss their experiences.

While the USGS has not provided detailed comment on this recent swarm, their guidelines specify that micro-quakes do not serve as reliable indicators of larger seismic events. Additionally, they note that while heavy rain typically does not influence seismic activity, fluctuations in weather patterns can potentially impact fault zones.
