A dramatic encounter unfolded outside a hospital in Orange County early Wednesday morning, resulting in police gunfire that critically injured a man wielding a machete. The incident began as a road rage dispute that escalated into chaos, leading to a lockdown at UCI Health in Los Alamitos.
Details of the Incident
Authorities reported that around 10 a.m., the Long Beach Police Department received calls about a suspected DUI and aggressive driving incident. This reckless behavior culminated near the hospital, where the suspect allegedly collided with a Long Beach Fire Department vehicle that was transporting a patient.
After the crash, the driver fled the scene on foot, prompting police to establish a perimeter around the hospital. SWAT teams and multiple police agencies, including those from Los Alamitos, Long Beach, and Cypress, responded rapidly to the unfolding situation.
Confrontation with Police
During the standoff, crisis negotiators attempted to communicate with the suspect, but those efforts proved ineffective. According to Robert Acosta, a spokesperson for the Los Alamitos police, officers resorted to using less-lethal rounds to subdue the man. Eyewitness footage captured moments of the confrontation, showing a shirtless individual brandishing the machete and reacting aggressively to police demands.
As the situation escalated, screams echoed from bystanders as the suspect charged at the officers before ducking behind vehicles. This prompted police to fire their weapons in response. The man was subsequently struck by gunfire and was rushed to a nearby trauma center.
As of Wednesday afternoon, authorities reported that the suspect was in critical but stable condition and was undergoing surgery. Interestingly, the officers involved in this shooting were not from the Long Beach Police Department, as stated in their official statement. Acosta confirmed that officers from two different agencies discharged their firearms multiple times in the encounter.
The Orange County district attorney’s office has yet to provide further comments regarding the ongoing investigation.
