Fire Ignites and Spreads Rapidly
A significant brush fire erupted Friday afternoon in Gorman, causing timely evacuations and disrupting traffic on the 5 Freeway. Named the Ridge fire, this blaze reportedly started around 3 p.m. near Gorman Post Road and rapidly spread, engulfing nearly 100 acres in its initial moments.
Within just a few hours, the situation escalated as the fire grew to 1,000 acres, prompting the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to take action. The spread of the fire was accelerated by strong south-to-southeast winds, which whipped through the area at speeds of 6 to 10 mph, with occasional gusts of 15 mph.
Firefighters from the L.A. County Fire Department, about 230 strong, have been actively battling the blaze. In response to the alarming growth of the fire, a fleet of aircraft and helicopters has been deployed to assist in containment efforts.
Evacuations and Traffic Effects
By 4:45 p.m., the fire had crossed the busy 5 Freeway, leading authorities to implement evacuation orders for Gorman and Hungry Valley residents located to the west of the highway. Additional evacuation alerts were issued for areas both south and north of the fire, affecting nearby communities in Kern County.
As a result of the fire, the 5 Freeway experienced significant lane closures, creating heavy traffic delays in the Grapevine region. While southbound lanes reopened just before 7 p.m., the northbound lanes remained closed at Smokey Bear Road due to ongoing fire activity.
Furthermore, the South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a smoke advisory for northern L.A. County. Residents are advised to stay indoors, ensuring doors and windows are closed, and maintaining clean air circulation within their homes.
As the evening approached, conditions became somewhat more manageable for firefighters, with temperatures cooling off. Fire officials expressed optimism about the progress being made as they continued to fight the Ridge fire efficiently through the night.
