The Los Angeles Police Department is raising awareness about a troubling theft scheme targeting seniors, seeking the community’s assistance in identifying two suspects involved. This alleged “distraction ID theft scheme” has left victims particularly vulnerable, as reported by local authorities.
How the Theft Occurred
Investigators revealed that the suspects closely monitored a victim as they entered their PIN at a local business in San Pedro. In a cunning move, one suspect dropped money on the ground before tapping the victim on the shoulder, effectively diverting their attention.
While the victim was distracted, the second suspect attempted to steal the victim’s debit card. When their initial attempt within the store failed, the thieves didn’t give up. They followed the victim into the parking lot, where they successfully snatched the card, leading to significant financial loss for the victim.
Call for Community Vigilance
The LAPD has released descriptions of the suspects and emphasized the importance of community vigilance in combating such deceptive crimes. They are urging anyone who may recognize the individuals involved to come forward and assist in the investigation. Ensuring the safety of our seniors is a shared responsibility, and awareness is the first step in preventing these types of crimes.
