Drivers like Jorge Nieto from Burbank, who relies on his vehicle for work, are feeling the pinch. Nieto reported that filling up his van now costs $200, and he often finds himself making daily trips to the gas station. “It’s hurting me really bad… It’s not putting us forward,” he lamented.
Similarly, Murrieta resident Ricardo Martinez echoed concerns about the financial strain on families as fuel prices remain elevated. “If these gas prices don’t come down soon, I don’t know how people are going to survive,” he said.
The increase in gas prices has also seen diesel costs soaring to unprecedented levels, with averages reaching around $8.10 per gallon in Los Angeles County—an alarming rise of nearly $3 from the previous year. Experts suggest that these trends are directly tied to the conflict affecting fuel production, particularly with Russia limping under sanctions and facing attacks on its refining infrastructure.
The Broader Economic Impact
According to Patrick DeHaan from GasBuddy, the supply chain issues caused by higher diesel prices may lead to increased costs for a wide range of consumer goods. With transportation becoming pricier, everyday expenses—from groceries to online deliveries—may follow suit. Nieto raised a valid point about consumer spending: “How are you going to spend money if you can’t go nowhere?” he wondered.
In the meantime, the average gas price in Orange County mirrored that of Los Angeles County, also surpassing $6 per gallon. As gas prices continue to soar, California residents are feeling the effects in their wallets. In contrast, a new gas station chain in the San Fernando Valley is attempting to mitigate some of this burden by offering prices below the state average, selling regular gas at $4.99 per gallon.
Despite the bleak outlook for fuel prices nationwide, which have climbed significantly over the past month, community efforts like those of the Stars & Stripes Gas and Travel Center may offer a small reprieve for local drivers.
