Repair Efforts Underway on Sunset Boulevard
In West Hollywood, teams are diligently working to address the significant damage caused by a water main break that led to a massive sinkhole on Sunset Boulevard. Since last Thursday, when a 110-year-old trunk line burst and released millions of gallons of water, the street has been a priority for repairs.
The goal is to have Sunset Boulevard reopened by the end of the week. Crews have been busy filling the gaping hole and preparing the roadway for reconstruction. Heavy machinery has been employed to remove the damaged pavement, allowing for the next phase of repair work to commence.
Progress Made and Community Impact
According to Joe Castruita, the water distribution manager for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, considerable progress has been made in backfilling the sinkhole with a slurry mixture. “We’ve completed a lot of slurry backfill,” he noted, emphasizing the scale of the repair effort.
The sinkhole itself stretches approximately 60 feet in length, 40 feet in width, and reaches depths of 6 to 10 feet. To nearly bring the hole back to street level, crews utilized 30 truckloads of slurry mix. This process is a combination of demolition as well as reconstruction, focusing on fixing the pavement while preparing for a final paving layer.
While waiting for the slurry to cure, various agency teams are conducting water quality tests and addressing additional damage caused by the flooding. Locals have observed the repairs throughout the week and shared their thoughts on the progress.
Remi Dhillon, a nearby resident, remarked on the activity, saying, “I saw the cement trucks this morning on the way to work and thought, ‘Oh, they’re going to fill the hole.’ Then I realized that hole was too big for just cement, but clearly, that’s what they did.”
Further down the street on Palm Avenue, efforts are also underway to clear out-water damaged vehicles from underground garages that were affected by the flooding, marking the community’s resilience in the face of these challenges.
