A devastating incident unfolded at Reseda Charter High School, resulting in the tragic death of 12-year-old Khimberly Zavaleta Chuquipa. Authorities have arrested a minor in connection with this case, which centers around an alleged bullying altercation that turned fatal.
Details of the Incident
The unfortunate event occurred on February 17, when Khimberly, in an act of bravery, attempted to defend her older sister against bullies. In the course of this attempt, she was struck on the head with a metal water bottle by another 12-year-old student. The blow caused serious injury, prompting immediate medical attention.
Initially, Khimberly was transported to Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, where she was evaluated and released. However, her condition deteriorated three days later, leading to a catastrophic medical crisis that required urgent brain surgery at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. Sadly, she passed away on February 25, prompting the LAPD to classify the case as a homicide.
Family’s Heartbreak and Legal Action
Khimberly’s family expressed their grief, stating she was the light of their lives, cherishing the simple joys of family, music, and volleyball. They have since initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her funeral and medical expenses. In a heartbreaking statement, her mother described Khimberly’s aspirations of becoming a doctor, emphasizing how she wanted to care for her family.
In addition to mourning their loss, Khimberly’s family has filed legal action against the Los Angeles Unified School District. They allege that school officials failed to take appropriate measures to address previous bullying incidents, which included their daughters being targeted consistently on campus. The family’s attorney highlighted that the same individuals had also harassed other students in the weeks leading up to the incident.
The district has referred inquiries regarding the arrest to the LAPD, stating that they cannot comment on ongoing litigation.
