A devastating incident unfolded on Highway 87 when a Tesla, driven by Zachary Chernicky, accelerated to over 140 mph before crashing into several vehicles. This tragic event, which took place in December 2025, resulted in the heartbreaking deaths of a mother and her young daughter.

Chernicky, a 31-year-old tech executive from San Jose, has been charged with the fatal crash that involved three vehicles. Prosecutors shared that he was driving at an alarming speed when the collision occurred, which has drawn significant public scrutiny.
Deputy District Attorney Marisa McKeown emphasized that it’s important to understand that the crash was not due to a malfunction of the Tesla itself, but rather Chernicky’s reckless driving. “Driving at that speed isn’t just a mistake; it leads to severe consequences on our roads,” she remarked.
A Family’s Heartbreaking Loss
The tragic details became clearer as investigators revealed that Chernicky was heading northbound on Highway 87 when his vehicle collided with another Tesla, a Lexus, and a Toyota. The impact was catastrophic, causing both Teslas and the Lexus to catch fire. Video footage from the scene depicted the aftermath, with the burned wreckage of the vehicles littering the highway.
Among those affected was 29-year-old Ivana Balistreri, who was seated in the front passenger seat of the Lexus, alongside her fiancé and their one-year-old daughter, Lilliana, who was safely strapped into her child seat. Tragically, both Ivana and Lilliana perished in the crash, with Lilliana just two weeks shy of her second birthday.
Witnesses recounted the desperate efforts made by Balistreri’s fiancé, who was seen trying to rescue his family from the engulfed vehicle. Video shared by family members revealed his frantic attempts to reach them amid the flames, but sadly, both Ivana and Lilliana succumbed to the fire.
