Following last week’s catastrophic water main break on Sunset Boulevard, residents of West Hollywood are grappling with significant destruction. An astonishing 17 million gallons of water surged down Palm Avenue, wreaking havoc in the area.
The Repair Efforts Underway
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has made progress by replacing the broken pipe, but the thorough testing and repairs are ongoing before the system can be restored to normal operations. Mayor John Heilman emphasized the importance of safety over speed. “There’s a lot that they still have to test to make sure that the pipe is safe. We want it done right, not fast,” he stated.
Sunset Boulevard is expected to be closed for the immediate future as crews work diligently on repairs. LADWP officials have indicated that the roadway could potentially reopen by Wednesday or Thursday if everything goes according to plan. Despite tireless efforts around the clock, the complexity of the repair process means that there’s still much work to be done.
Once the trunk line has been secured, crews will start the backfilling process using a slurry mix, which will require curing for several hours followed by an additional wait of 24 hours to ensure stability. Only then can they apply fresh asphalt, disinfect the repair pipe with chlorine, and flush it to ensure cleanliness.
Impact on the Community
During a productive virtual meeting with residents, Mayor Heilman addressed the ongoing challenges faced by those affected by the flooding. Many community members are in distress, having lost their vehicles or temporarily displaced from their homes. Heilman noted that between 150 and 200 cars have either been damaged or completely destroyed due to the flooding incident. Additionally, several residences were impacted, with reports of water intrusion in at least seven apartment units, four of which experienced significant damage.
As the situation unfolds, two residential buildings remain without power during the repair efforts. Heilman mentioned the need for electricians to replace damaged electrical panels before those buildings can regain power. Meanwhile, LADWP has mobilized 200 staff members to restore water service and reopen the streets affected by the break.
While inspections of the transmission line for leaks continue, the LADWP team is also verifying the structural integrity of the new pipe. Mayor Heilman praised the LADWP’s quick response, stating, “I know that LADWP has been out here working around the clock, and it’s amazing that they’ve already got the replacement pipe in there. They’re doing some testing and discovering some pinhole leaks that they have to fix, but that’s a pretty normal process with a replacement pipe of this size.”
