Historic swells continue to impact California beaches, raising concerns about safety and potential flooding. The effects of the recent weather patterns are expected to persist through Wednesday, according to weather officials.
Although the surf might not reach the dangerous heights experienced last week, which tragically resulted in the loss of two lives, caution remains critical. The National Weather Service reported that San Francisco experienced its highest recorded summer ocean water level late Saturday, measuring 1.83 feet above the normal high tide. This marks a significant statistic, as it is the highest level recorded outside of the winter storm surges since measurements began in 1898.
Ongoing Flood Risks and Advisory
With a coastal flood advisory in place until Wednesday morning, residents are urged to remain vigilant. The tide levels are projected to be highest in the evenings, potentially increasing the risk of coastal flooding.
In Santa Cruz, a recent incident saw a woman lose her life and another end up in critical condition after being swept out to sea due to powerful tides. These hazardous ocean conditions are anticipated to continue throughout the weekend along the California coastline, putting beachgoers at risk.
Authorities pinpoint that the most dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves have been occurring mainly at beaches oriented south and southwest. Consequently, Newport Beach has taken proactive measures by announcing king tide events that will be ongoing through Tuesday. City officials are providing sandbags to help residents safeguard their properties from potential flooding and have cautioned against parking in low-lying areas.
Safety Measures for Beachgoers
As the high surf continues, recent weeks have seen unprecedented waves of up to 20 feet at various popular surfing spots, such as the Wedge in Newport Beach. The risk remains high as rescuers recently attempted to save two women swept away by the surf. Unfortunately, one of them did not survive, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and caution.
Additionally, the search for a missing 5-year-old girl, Amada Mia Brown, concluded recently when her body was recovered in Laguna Beach days after she was lost in the turbulent waves. This heartbreaking incident further underscores the importance of beach safety.
Authorities recommend avoiding rocky areas and jetties during periods of high surf. If caught in a rip current, it is crucial not to panic; instead, swimming parallel to the shore until free of the current is advised. If necessary, tread water and call for assistance.
