A tragic incident unfolded in the Coachella Valley when a couple was found dead in their home, raising questions about a potential scam involving a person impersonating actor Tom Selleck. This unsettling story has drawn attention and concern from the local community.
The Discovery of the Whitakers
Last week, authorities discovered the bodies of 80-year-old Donald Whitaker and his 79-year-old wife, Karen, after a neighbor initiated a wellness check. Upon arrival, Riverside County sheriff’s deputies found the couple suffering from severe injuries and sadly pronounced them dead at the scene. The couple had resided in the upscale golf community of Bermuda Dunes, situated just east of Palm Desert.
As investigations by sheriff’s homicide detectives continue, there remain no clear updates on the case, and it is uncertain whether the alleged scam was connected to their tragic deaths.
The Alleged Tom Selleck Scam
According to reports, Karen Whitaker may have encountered a fraudulent individual posing as Selleck, the actor known for his role in CBS’s police drama “Blue Bloods.” A family friend, Joy Miedecke, revealed that this impersonator contacted Karen after she made a memorial post on Facebook about a high school friend.
Miedecke, who serves as the club president of the East Valley Republican Women Patriots, explained how the scam operated: “They found her phone number, messaged her claiming to be Tom Selleck, and said they had a connection through a friend of hers.” This conversation marked the beginning of a troubling situation.
Unfortunately, Karen started to send money to the scammer, beginning with minor amounts through gift cards, which later escalated to significant sums. Miedecke had raised concerns about this fraudulent activity, prompting family members to take action by canceling credit cards and limiting Karen’s bank access.
In their efforts to intervene, the Whitaker family even enlisted someone with ties to Selleck to reach out to Karen, emphasizing that the actor would never engage in such deceitful behavior. Despite these warnings, Miedecke noted that Karen remained steadfast in her belief.
As the investigation continues, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has not commented specifically on the scam allegations. This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by fraudsters who prey on vulnerable individuals seeking connection.
