From Pursuit to Arrest: The Capture of a Suspected Homicide Gunman

A dramatic sequence of events unfolded when law enforcement apprehended a man tied to a double homicide in Pomona after a high-speed chase that spanned several miles. The pursuit initiated when the Pomona police arrived at an apartment complex, uncovering the lifeless bodies of a man and woman in a hallway, victims of gun violence.

The Chase Begins

The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Robert Galtman, reportedly fled the crime scene, prompting the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to engage in a chase. The situation escalated around 3:30 p.m. as Galtman drove a Kia northbound on the 5 Freeway, putting officers on high alert due to the potentially dangerous nature of the suspect.

Galtman’s evasive maneuvers included dodging spike strips laid out by authorities and recklessly zigzagging through traffic. At times he crossed over to the wrong side of the freeway, keeping officers on their toes as he navigated steep, winding mountain roads. Witnesses reported seeing him discarding various items from the vehicle during the pursuit.

Ending the Pursuit

Law enforcement ultimately brought the chase to a halt in the Antelope Valley using a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, safely slowing the vehicle to about 30 mph. As the Kia came to a stop, video footage captured the suspect exiting the car slowly, hands raised and pants sagging, as he walked backward towards the officers who promptly arrested him.

Post-arrest, officers also discovered a small puppy inside Galtman’s vehicle. The puppy was retrieved and taken into protective custody, adding an unexpected note to the otherwise tense situation.

More details regarding the ongoing investigation have yet to be released as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the tragic double homicide in Pomona.
