LA Mayor Karen Bass Unveils Ambitious Budget Proposal for 2026-27

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is set to present her budget proposal for the fiscal year 2026-27, a bold $47.9 billion plan designed to tackle pressing financial challenges and prioritize essential city services.

Highlights of the Proposed Budget

The proposed budget aims to mitigate significant financial pressures that have emerged, particularly due to the costs associated with January’s wildfires, which alone accounted for over $1 billion. During a press conference scheduled for 11 a.m. at City Hall, Bass will outline her vision, which emphasizes enhanced revenue streams and continued progress in key areas such as homelessness, housing, public safety, and infrastructure repairs, including sidewalks and streetlights.

In her first term, Bass has made notable strides, including nearly an 18% reduction in street homelessness, as reported in the annual point-in-time homeless count. She also aims to highlight decreased homicide rates and the implementation of policies that expedite housing developments.

Next Steps in the Budget Process

After the formal announcement of the budget, it will be sent to the City Council’s Budget and Finance Committee, led by Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky. The committee will engage in a thorough review, which includes hearings with various department heads, and may propose adjustments based on the priorities identified by the council.

It’s crucial for Mayor Bass and the City Council to finalize the budget before the new fiscal year begins on July 1. Yaroslavsky emphasizes a commitment to addressing fiscal challenges while safeguarding core services, ensuring that the budget remains viable for the city’s needs.

Additionally, to encourage community involvement, Yaroslavsky will host a “community conversation” via Zoom on Tuesday at 6 p.m., inviting Los Angeles residents to provide input on the mayor’s budget proposal. The budget committee will also hold its initial hearing on Friday at 1 p.m., where organizations like Black Lives Matter Los Angeles and the People’s Budget LA Coalition will present their proposals and priorities.

As Bass campaigns for a second term—having won her initial election in 2022 against billionaire developer Rick Caruso—she faces challengers including nonprofit leader Adam Miller, City Councilwoman Nithya Raman, reality TV star Spencer Pratt, and housing advocate Rae Chen Huang. A recent UCLA poll indicates a divided electorate, with 40% of voters yet to decide, while Bass leads the race with 25% support.

If no candidate secures a majority in the upcoming June 2 primary, the top two contenders will compete in a runoff scheduled for November. Another poll from Loyola Marymount University has positioned Raman as the frontrunner, closely followed by Bass, Huang, Miller, and Pratt.
