Navy Jets Collide During Air Show, Crew Members Escape Unharmed

During an exciting air show at the Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, a dramatic incident unfolded as two U.S. Navy EA-18G Growlers collided mid-flight. Fortunately, all four crew members managed to eject safely, avoiding what could have been a catastrophic disaster.

The Incident Unfolds

The collision occurred while the jets were performing an aerial demonstration, as confirmed by Cmdr. Amelia Umayam, a spokesperson for Naval Air Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet. The event took a serious turn, but thanks to the swift actions of the crew, everyone on board escaped the situation intact.

Base officials reported that the crew members are in stable condition and none of the spectators or personnel at the military base were injured. Kim Sykes, the director of marketing for Silver Wings of Idaho, who organized the air show, expressed relief saying, “Everyone is safe and I think that’s the most important thing.”

Immediate Response and Investigation

Following the crash, the base was put on lockdown, and the remainder of the air show was called off. Eyewitness videos shared on social media depicted the alarming moment as four parachutes opened in the sky, with the jets plummeting to the ground approximately 50 miles south of Boise, resulting in a fiery explosion on impact.

Shane Ogden, an attendee who filmed the incident, described the tense moment as he captured footage of the jets colliding, leading to their simultaneous crash while the crew ejected to safety. “I was just filming thinking they were going to split apart, and then that happened; it was shocking,” he noted.

The EA-18G Growler, known for its advanced electronic warfare capabilities, was the focus of admiration at the air show, which featured thrilling flying demonstrations and parachute jumps, highlighting both historical and modern-day aviation feats. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds also showcased their skills during the event.

Aviation safety specialists have commented on the incident, noting the extraordinary circumstances that allowed both crews to eject successfully. Jeff Guzzetti, an expert in aviation safety, remarked on the unique manner of the crash, which kept the jets together briefly, possibly aiding the crew’s ability to escape. He emphasized that mid-air collisions leave little room for error, highlighting the complexities of precision flying.

The Gunfighter Skies event was particularly significant, marking the first air show at the base since a tragic incident in 2018 that resulted in the death of a hang glider pilot. Such events have prompted heightened safety measures in the air show industry, which has seen a decline in fatal incidents over recent years.

As investigations begin, the Navy will lead the inquiry to ascertain the details of this unusual crash. Remarkably, the surviving crew members will be able to provide valuable insights into their experience just moments before the collision, aiding in the comprehensive examination of the event.
