Incredible Discovery of a Secret Cocaine Tunnel Under San Diego Store

A secretive passageway, hidden beneath the inconspicuous “Buy 4 Less” outlet in San Diego County, has come to light, with law enforcement revealing it was used for smuggling an astounding $45 million worth of cocaine from Mexico into California. The tunnel, extending nearly 2,000 feet and delving down 55 feet, featured reinforced walls, a rail system, ventilation, and electricity, suggesting a high level of sophistication.

Investigation Uncovers Suspicious Activity

Authorities from Homeland Security began their investigation after noticing unusual activity at the store back in December. They observed a new group of employees frequently entering and exiting the building with numerous suitcases, a concerning sign as regular customers were notably absent. The investigation intensified when agents spotted a man loading heavy items into a van parked nearby, sparking further scrutiny.

Among those detained was 26-year-old Brandon Escalante Sandoval, who was conducting surveillance on a bicycle. He was seen retrieving a concealed key from a van’s gas cap, allowing a group to transfer three deep freezers filled with suspect packages into a truck. This truck was later stopped by San Diego County sheriff’s deputies, who, with the assistance of a police dog, detected the presence of controlled substances. Additionally, two other vehicles related to the operation were stopped, unearthing more illicit materials.

Dismantling the Operation and Discovering the Tunnel

In total, over a ton of cocaine was uncovered, with investigators seizing 851 packages from three different vehicles. Following these discoveries, authorities executed a search warrant at the Buy 4 Less store, where they unearthed the elaborate tunnel. This tunnel featured a sophisticated hydraulic lift as its entrance and extended all the way from Otay Mesa to Tijuana in Mexico.

The use of such tunnels has become a known tactic for trafficking narcotics across the border, with 99 tunnels identified in California’s Southern District since 1993. However, the complexity and scale of this particular tunnel highlight a significant operation.

According to Kevin Murphy, acting special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations in San Diego, the successful discovery and dismantling of this tunnel, along with the substantial drug seizure, represent a considerable setback for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The men involved in this operation, including Hernandez Lopez, who faces charges for conspiracy related to the tunnel and drug smuggling, could face life in prison and hefty fines if convicted of their charges. Others implicated, such as Jimenez, Escalante Sandoval, and Cortez, are similarly facing serious charges related to drug distribution.
