A 38-year-old man from Jurupa Valley tragically passed away while in custody on Saturday, following a medical emergency that occurred at the Robert Presley Detention Center, as reported by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
Brian Waterman was taken into custody Thursday evening by the Jurupa Valley Police Department. On Friday, he experienced a significant medical crisis in his holding cell. Jail staff and medical personnel responded quickly, providing necessary aid during the incident.
Investigation Underway
Despite the prompt response, Waterman’s condition deteriorated, and he was pronounced dead the following day in a local hospital. Details regarding the specific nature of the medical emergency and the circumstances surrounding his arrest have not been disclosed. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Corrections Central Investigation Bureau, along with the county coroner, are currently investigating the case. However, authorities have stated that there were no signs indicating foul play.
Sgt. Robert Martinez, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, has refrained from providing further comments on the specific circumstances of Waterman’s detention. This incident marks the second in-custody death reported by the department this month. Earlier, on April 3, the sheriff’s office confirmed the death of 35-year-old Maurice Landon Williamson, a Las Vegas resident, who was transferred to the hospital due to a pre-existing illness.
These recent events raise significant concerns about the care and treatment of individuals in custody, highlighting the pressing need for reforms within the system.
