Tragedy Strikes at Six Flags: Family Files Suit After Young Man's Death on X2 Coaster

In a heart-wrenching development, the family of 22-year-old Christopher Hawley is taking legal action against Six Flags Magic Mountain, claiming that the amusement park is responsible for his tragic passing. Christopher suffered fatal head trauma after a ride on the notorious X2 roller coaster, with a medical examination later categorizing his death as an accident stemming from a “park ride accident.” The trial is set to begin shortly, bringing heightened attention to safety standards at amusement parks.

The Incident on June 23, 2022

Christopher, alongside his younger brother Alex and their cousin, visited the theme park on June 23, 2022. Shortly after enjoying the X2 coaster, Christopher showed alarming signs of distress. His family reported that he looked unwell, with a flushed face, before he collapsed unexpectedly. Alex described the ride as excessively rough, highlighting how it jerked riders around, culminating in a jarring forward motion that slammed their heads back.

Emergency medical personnel rushed Christopher to a local hospital, where he sadly passed away the next day. The findings from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner determined that his cause of death was blunt head trauma as a result of the roller coaster ride, drawing comparisons to the trauma seen in shaken baby syndrome.

Questions About Ride Safety

The family’s legal team is now questioning whether Six Flags or the coaster’s manufacturer had any prior knowledge of structural or design issues related to the X2. Despite the gravity of the situation, specifics about the ride’s mechanical condition and any prior internal reviews from the day of the incident have not been disclosed by the park. Additionally, the autopsy results did not indicate whether any health factors were considered apart from Christopher’s head injuries.

Christopher’s mother vividly recalls the moment they learned of the tragedy. “I remember him [Alex] saying, ‘Mom, Christopher collapsed, and he’s not waking up.'” She expressed the profound emotional impact on their family, stating, “We went from a family of four to a family of three in an instant. It is devastating. It is a piece of us that is gone forever.” Meanwhile, Alex reiterated how frightening the ride was, stating, “It just jerked us all around,” and described how their heads were violently pushed back during the ride’s finish.

Christopher’s father, William, shared insights from medical professionals, conveying that the surgeon likened the incident to shaken baby syndrome, indicating that the impact from the ride was so severe it led to a rupture of Christopher’s brain.

Attorney Timothy Loranger highlighted the responsibilities amusement parks have to ensure patron safety. “If you’re going to operate that and you’re going to invite the public to ride, you need to take every possible step to ensure their safety and prevent injuries that could potentially lead to death,” he remarked.

Although Six Flags has refrained from commenting directly on the lawsuit, they have confirmed that the X2 ride is currently closed and has been since July 12. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for a jury trial in Chatsworth, set to commence on September 8, targeting claims related to defective design and a failure to adequately warn riders. The ongoing investigation by state regulators with Cal/OSHA into a different incident involving the ride adds another layer of scrutiny to this tragic case.
