Fatal Encounter in Santa Monica: Police Respond to Knife-Wielding Man

A tense situation unfolded Saturday afternoon when Santa Monica police officers were called to address a domestic disturbance near Palisades Park, located by Ocean Avenue, close to the bustling Santa Monica Pier. As officers engaged with a witness, a man not related to the initial call charged at them wielding a knife.

According to Santa Monica Police Chief Darrick Jacob, the man disregarded multiple commands to drop his weapon, continuing to approach the officers aggressively. In response to the immediate threat, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the man.

Despite swift actions to administer first aid and the arrival of paramedics from the Santa Monica Fire Department, the man, believed to be in his mid-40s, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, around 1:49 p.m. His identity has not yet been released, pending formal identification and notification of next of kin.

Community Reaction

This tragic incident unfolded in front of numerous families enjoying a day at the Pier, with onlookers expressing horror at the scene. Witness Caroline Iwanchuk recalled, “I literally came out, and I could see them doing chest compressions. It was scary and sad… I don’t like to see people getting killed.”

Jonathan Wiers, who had planned a beach day from West Hollywood, found himself unexpectedly trapped due to police tape restricting access to his vehicle after 6 p.m. He shared his frustration, saying, “We have a dog at home, trying to get home to our dog. We had dinner plans in Highland Park. We can’t do that anymore.”

Local resident Jesse Gualt reflected on the emotional toll such incidents can have on officers and expressed gratitude for their bravery in facing dangerous situations. “I can only imagine how traumatic it could be for the officer. I’m appreciative of people who have to engage with that kind of energy and that level of danger,” Gualt stated.

As the investigation continues, the Santa Monica Police Department is asking the public to steer clear of the area. Review processes will include examining body-worn camera footage to ensure transparency and accountability regarding the incident.
