The heart-wrenching story of a 13-year-old from Orange County, who lost his life in an electric motorcycle accident, has taken a serious turn as his parents face charges related to his death. Authorities allege that Vu Thanh Nguyen and his wife, Hong Cuc Thi Nguyen, acted recklessly by allowing their son, Benson, to ride an e-motorcycle despite previous injuries.
The Incident and Charges
Benson tragically died in May after crashing his E Ride Pro motorcycle into a pole while traveling at speeds exceeding 40 mph in Garden Grove. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer announced that Vu faces felony child endangerment charges and a misdemeanor for contributing to juvenile delinquency, while his wife is charged with child endangerment. If found guilty, Vu could face up to six years in state prison, whereas his wife may face a year in county jail.
Both parents are set to appear for arraignment on November 12, but as of now, it remains unclear whether they have legal representation.
Rising Concerns Over E-Motorcycle Safety
This tragic event is part of a concerning trend. E-bike and e-motorcycle accidents have become the leading cause of emergency room visits among children in Orange County, with reported injuries soaring over 430% in Southern California in just four years.
Similar incidents have raised alarms in the area, including recent deaths in Huntington Beach connected to e-bike accidents. Officials emphasize that the e-motorcycle requires appropriate licensing and registration for street usage, which Benson did not have at the time of his fatal accident.
In this case, the attorney for the district indicated that there were multiple warnings to the Nguyen family about Benson’s reckless riding habits, which had led to previous injuries, including a broken leg just six months prior.
Despite these warnings, the parents continued to provide Benson with a more powerful motorcycle, heightening the risk of such tragedies. This unfortunate situation serves as a sobering reminder of the responsibilities parents have to ensure the safety of their children.
