A devoted Chicagoan traveled to Los Angeles to enjoy quality time with family and catch a Dodgers game against the Cubs, but his visit took a heartbreaking turn.
Jose Melesio, 65, lost his life in a tragic hit-and-run accident in the early hours of April 27, as reported by the Los Angeles Police Department. The incident occurred around 3:10 a.m., when a silver four-door sedan sped north on Figueroa Street and struck Melesio, continuing on without stopping.
Emergency responders arrived, but sadly, Melesio was pronounced dead at the scene. Under California law, any driver involved in an accident resulting in injury or death is obligated to stop, notify authorities, and provide their identity.
Community Mourning and Call for Justice
In the wake of this tragedy, the LAPD is offering a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator. Melesio’s family expressed their devastation over the loss, recalling him as a loving uncle and friend who brought joy to every family gathering.
“Jose was excited to visit Los Angeles and watch the Cubs play the Dodgers,” they shared. “He created lasting bonds and was always present for those he loved.”
Authorities are actively seeking assistance from local auto repair shops, encouraging them to report any recent repairs on a sedan that matches the description of the suspect’s vehicle. Detective Ryan Moreno spoke at a press conference, highlighting the importance of public help as there is currently no available footage or images of the driver.
Moreno further revealed that Melesio was struck with such force that it propelled him into the air. This incident marks one of the many hit-and-run cases in South Los Angeles, with statistics indicating that 15 out of 29 traffic fatalities this year involved such accidents.
