In a devastating turn of events, gunfire erupted at the Islamic Center of San Diego, claiming the lives of three men on Monday. The attack, carried out by two teenage suspects who later took their own lives, is being deemed a hate crime by local authorities.
Details of the Incident
Police were alerted at approximately 11:45 a.m., and officers arrived on the scene within four minutes. As they approached, shots were heard nearby, where a landscaper was fortunately unharmed despite being targeted. The suspects were eventually found deceased in a vehicle just a few blocks away, victims of an apparent suicide.
Among those who lost their lives was Amin Abdullah, a mosque security guard who is being acknowledged for his brave efforts in preventing further casualties. Friends and family have praised him as a devoted father of eight, known for his warm greetings and concern for visitors.
Initial reports misidentified the ages of the suspects as 17 and 19; they have since been confirmed to be 17 and 18. Investigators believe the shotguns used in the attack were stolen from their parents’ home.
Not long before the shooting, police received a report from a parent regarding a runaway juvenile. This alerted them to the potential threat, prompting increased surveillance which included tracking the suspects’ vehicle around the city.
Authorities discovered anti-Islamic writings in the suspects’ vehicle, and search warrants are being executed at locations tied to the teenagers.
Community Response and Safety Measures
The Islamic Center of San Diego, which is home to the Al Rashid School offering Arabic language and Islamic studies courses, is now grappling with the aftermath of this horrific event. Fortunately, all children present during the incident were safely evacuated.
Imam Taha Hassane expressed his outrage, emphasizing that places of worship should never be targeted. “All the places of worship in our beautiful city should always be protected,” he stated, highlighting the center’s commitment to fostering interfaith relations and community engagement.
In the wake of the shooting, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has condemned the act, urging the community to remain vigilant and supportive. They reiterated that no one should fear for their safety while attending prayers or educational activities.
As investigations unfold, police departments across the nation are increasing their presence at mosques and Islamic centers to ensure public safety. The Los Angeles Police Department, while reporting no known threats, is executing additional patrols in similar areas as a precautionary measure.
The Islamic Center’s mission extends beyond its immediate community, focusing on serving all individuals, educating, and participating in social causes together with organizations of diverse faiths.
