Ventura County Immigration Activists Face Federal Raids Amid Ongoing Tensions

Federal Action Against Activists

An early morning raid rattled the Ventura County community as federal agents targeted the homes of local immigrant rights activists. Activists claim this operation was a direct response to their efforts in monitoring and documenting immigration enforcement activities in the area.

During the raid, which took place around 3 a.m. Wednesday, four locations were searched, including the business and residence of volunteer Leo Martinez. He reported a tense encounter where federal agents reportedly pointed firearms at him and his mother, yet no arrests were made. Authorities confiscated several items, including cell phones, laptops, and merchandise featuring the logo of VC Defensa, the grassroots group involved in monitoring immigration activities.

Legal Concerns and Allegations of Harassment

In the wake of the raids, representatives from VC Defensa, along with their attorney Reem Yassin, announced plans to pursue legal action against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). They allege that members of their group have faced ongoing harassment due to their legal activism in observing and documenting immigration raids.

The DHS confirmed the execution of search warrants linked to VC Defensa, but has refrained from offering specifics regarding the underlying investigation. A spokesperson indicated there have been prior incidents involving members of the organization, suggesting a history of tension between federal authorities and local activists.

Martinez emphasized the transparency of their efforts, stating, “We have nothing to hide. If they had access to all of our messaging going back to the beginning, there’s nothing in there.” Despite the intimidation tactics, he reiterated the group’s commitment to continuing their work in the community.

Activists also shared their experiences of feeling unsafe, revealing that they have been subjected to threats and aggressive follow-ups by federal agents over recent months. In one incident, Martinez himself was involved in a confrontation where he alleges agents accused him of aggression- charges that were never formally pressed.

As the community rallies around VC Defensa, the atmosphere remains tense. During a press conference, group members vowed to resist the intimidation, declaring, “We will not stand by and let them continue to try to intimidate us.” Martinez asserted, “We keep moving forward. We have a ton of patrolling still going on,” indicating their determination to persist in their advocacy.
