Sugar, the iconic surfing dog and therapy companion, has sadly passed away, leaving behind a legacy that will forever ripple through the hearts of many.
A Life Well Lived
At the age of 16, this spirited rescue dog from Huntington Beach made waves not just on the ocean but in the lives of those she met. Sugar, known for her incredible surfing skills, was the first dog to be inducted into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame. Last Monday, she crossed her final shore after a brave battle with cancer, surrounded by love in her owner’s arms.
A post shared on her Instagram poignantly reflected her impact: “She lived to put smiles on faces and change dog surfing forever! Thank you for loving Sugar. Goodbye my Sugar. I can’t believe I’m writing this; I’m going to miss you so much.” This heartfelt message encapsulates the love and joy Sugar brought to everyone around her.
A Surfing Sensation
Rescued from life on the streets, Sugar’s passion for surfing soon propelled her into the spotlight. Dressed in her signature life jacket, onlookers would watch in awe as she skillfully rode the waves, sometimes fearlessly on her own and other times delightfully alongside her owner, Ryan Rustan. Her remarkable talent led her to become a five-time dog surfing world champion, and in 2024, she left paw prints alongside those of famous surfers in Huntington Beach, marking her achievement with pride.
At her Hall of Fame induction, Rustan expressed his admiration, saying, “This is just incredible. Dreams do come true even for a surfing dog and guys like me.” Sugar’s talent and charm truly changed the dog surfing scene forever.
The Surf City community is mourning the loss of this beloved canine. A tribute on Huntington Beach’s social media described her as a local legend whose influence extended far beyond just catching waves. “From inspiring the surfing world to advocating for rescue dogs and bringing comfort to veterans, her impact reached far beyond the shoreline,” it read.
