Unusual Discovery During Inspection
A routine inspection at the border took a shocking turn when federal agents uncovered a man concealed within a vehicle’s gas tank. This peculiar incident occurred at the San Ysidro Port of Entry around 7:30 p.m. on February 27.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the 20-year-old driver of a 2005 GMC SUV drew suspicion during the inspection process. A canine unit signaled for a deeper investigation, which ultimately led to the harrowing discovery.
Emergency Response and Arrest
Upon further examination, authorities found a Mexican national squeezed into a makeshift compartment within the vehicle’s fuel system. Emergency services were summoned, and the man was rushed to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista to treat burns sustained during the ordeal. Meanwhile, the driver was arrested and taken to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego.
Mariza Marin, the San Ysidro Port Director, voiced her concerns regarding the risks involved in such smuggling operations, underscoring the unacceptable lengths smugglers go to in their pursuit of profit. “This case highlights the dangerous and inhumane tactics employed by smugglers who prioritize profit over human lives. Thanks to the vigilance and professionalism of U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, this individual was located and removed from a life-threatening situation, subsequently receiving the medical attention they needed,” Marin stated.
As the situation unfolds, the identities of both the driver and the man found in the tank remain undisclosed, along with the latter’s current health condition. It is also unclear what the relationship between the driver and the man is or whether charges will be brought against the one extracted from the gas tank.
Looking ahead, federal prosecutors are anticipated to file smuggling charges against the young driver, while the individual rescued will remain under medical supervision until immigration authorities decide on the next steps. U.S. Customs and Border Protection aims to enhance surveillance and implement more canine sweeps at the port to thwart similar dangerous smuggling attempts in the future.
