Tragic Hit-and-Run Accident Claims Lives of Bicyclists in Montclair

A Night of Celebration Turns Tragic

In a devastating incident late Saturday night, a festive Halloween bicycle ride took a horrific turn when an alleged drunk driver collided with a group of cyclists in Montclair, resulting in the loss of two lives and several injuries. Witnesses reported that around 10:30 p.m., approximately 30 cyclists were riding along Kingsley Street when a vehicle struck multiple riders before fleeing the scene.

Despite the chaos, one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second, a woman, succumbed to her injuries later at a nearby hospital. Local residents who witnessed the event described the scene as chaotic, with cries for help echoing through the neighborhood.

“We saw a bunch of bicyclists coming by, and then we heard the screams,” recounted Sarahi Palacio, a nearby resident who was unloading groceries when the crash occurred. “A woman was on the ground, hyperventilating with a head injury.”

Quick Action from the Community

In the aftermath of the collision, community members rallied to assist law enforcement in tracking down the suspect. Neighbors reviewed security footage that allegedly captured the vehicle speeding away from the scene.

One courageous resident took it upon himself to follow the suspect’s vehicle, driven by a sense of duty to protect his neighborhood. “The bicyclists shouted for help, so I jumped in my car and chased him down toward Pomona,” he shared. He managed to flag down a police officer, ensuring that the fleeing driver did not escape justice.

“This is my street. I live here with my son, who will grow up in this community. I couldn’t stand by and do nothing,” he said, reflecting on his motivations.

Arrest Made Following Swift Investigation

Authorities quickly located 38-year-old Valentin Alberto Rodriguez, a Montclair resident, at his home shortly after the incident. He was arrested and taken to the West Valley Detention Center on multiple charges, including driving under the influence, causing injury or death, and felony hit-and-run.

Montclair police confirmed that Rodriguez’s blood alcohol level was above the legal limit, marking this tragic event as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving.
