Brave Rescue Operation
A mother bear and her three adorable cubs found themselves in a tight spot this past Saturday, becoming trapped in a large water storage tank in La Verne. The situation called for a swift and brave response from local firefighters and wildlife officials, who sprang into action to ensure the safety of the furry family.
After several hours of distress, one adventurous cub managed to break free on its own, marking the beginning of what first responders affectionately named “Operation Care Bear.” The bears had spent over half a day inside the tank, which is located near the popular Claremont Wilderness Park’s 5-Mile Loop Trail.
Creative Solutions for a Happy Ending
Firefighters shared footage of the heart-pounding rescue as all three bears eventually emerged from the tank. It was revealed that the curious cubs had squeezed through a narrow one-foot opening to get trapped. To facilitate their escape, rescue crews carefully cut a larger hole in the tank and lowered a ladder for the bears to climb out.
Keith Navarre from the Los Angeles County Fire Department detailed the rescue process, noting that the bears were understandably exhausted. “It took a few minutes for the first cub to come out, then the second cub got out, and finally the mother followed,” he explained.
The bears had first been spotted early that morning by two local residents, Eric McDonald and Jamie Kirk. After climbing to the top of the tank, they were met with the sight of a bear desperately clinging to the walls amid the water-filled interior. Concerned for the animals’ well-being, McDonald remarked on the importance of getting them out before they became too weak from hunger and stress.
Further witnesses Tyler Christensen and Bradney Boli also documented the bears’ plight, with Christensen recalling the frightful scene inside the tank as the bears huddled together. “I just stuck my head in the hole. One was all tucked up on the top…they were just scared to death,” he said. Boli later expressed relief that the bears were saved in time, emphasizing the difficulty of hearing such a desperate situation.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife played a crucial role in the rescue by draining the tank’s water before the rescue teams took over. Experts suspect that the bears were simply searching for water amid the sweltering heat when they found themselves in trouble. Thankfully, one of the cubs that escaped earlier has been reunited with its family, and the rescue ended on a heartwarming note for all involved.
