Koreatown’s Boil-Water Advisory: What You Need to Know

Koreatown's Boil-Water Advisory: What You Need to Know

A boil-water warning has been issued in a portion of Koreatown due to the presence of E. coli bacteria detected during routine water testing. This notice was prompted by results indicating contamination, and it affects a two-block radius defined by South Ardmore Avenue to the west, South Mariposa Avenue to the east, West Fifth Street to the north, and West Sixth Street to the south.

Understanding the Advisory and Its Impact

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is advising residents and businesses within the affected area to avoid using tap water for drinking or food preparation unless it has been boiled. LADWP recommends that residents boil tap water for at least one minute before using it for consumption, cooking, or even brushing teeth.

While preliminary tests suggest the E. coli contamination originated from a specific testing site, LADWP reassures customers that the overall water distribution system remains unaffected. Approximately 460 households and several local businesses are included in the advisory.

Residents like Rosa Delcid have expressed concern, having already used the water for various daily activities before being made aware of the situation. “I’m very upset,” she shared, reflecting the growing frustration among her neighbors.

The Response from Local Businesses

The impact of the boil-water notice extends beyond households to local businesses. Kathy, a restaurant owner in the area, reported that although her establishment received bottled water from LADWP, the health department later instructed her to shut down operations until the water is safe. Uncertain about her restaurant’s reopening, she joins others in facing setbacks due to the advisory.

Leen Assi, who is preparing to launch her own restaurant, faced significant disruptions as workers had to seek water from outside the affected area to continue with construction. “It’s pretty frustrating because you’re on a tight schedule especially with construction. Everything is up in the air,” she admitted.

LADWP is continuously conducting further testing to ensure water quality is restored and promises to inform customers as soon as the boil-water notice can be lifted.
