A dramatic and unsettling incident transpired in Mentone on Friday when a man aimed his firearm at Southern California Edison employees, sparking a series of events that ended with law enforcement fatally shooting the suspect.
The trouble began around 10:50 a.m. in the 300 block of King Street, where sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene following reports of gunfire directed at utility workers engaged in tree-trimming operations. Fortunately, the uninjured crew managed to retreat to safety quickly after the shots were fired.
Standoff with Law Enforcement
By the time law enforcement arrived, the suspect had barricaded himself inside his residence. In an effort to resolve the situation peacefully, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deployed specialized crisis negotiators to communicate with the man and persuade him to surrender. Despite their best efforts, he remained inside and uncooperative.
At approximately 2 p.m., authorities reported that the situation escalated when the suspect opened fire on the deputies, prompting them to return fire and strike him. Emergency medical teams were summoned to provide aid, but sadly, the man succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter, with his identity yet to be disclosed.
