Details of the Incident
A man from Southern California has been found not guilty of murdering and dismembering his mother due to insanity. In a heartbreaking turn of events, David Hoetzlein, aged 25, killed his mother, Tomoko Hoetzlein, 62, and disposed of her remains in a dumpster near their Camarillo apartment in 2022.
Ventura County Chief Deputy District Attorney Erin Meister expressed the sorrow of the situation, stating, “Tomoko Hoetzlein was a devoted mother who did everything in her power to get her son the mental health treatment he desperately needed. Tragically, she lost her life while trying to help him.” This tragedy struck amidst efforts by Tomoko to seek appropriate care for her son.
The Court’s Finding and Background
David Hoetzlein was arrested following a report of possible human remains found in a dumpster. Authorities indicated that he had a history of severe mental illness and had recently been discharged from a treatment facility. Prior to the tragic incident, his mother had alerted both his caseworker and law enforcement about her concerns for his well-being.
In a significant finding, two independent doctors evaluated Hoetzlein and determined that he met the legal criteria for a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. As a result, he will be placed in a maximum-security mental health facility for treatment, facing the possibility of life in confinement.
Neighbors described the apartment complex as quiet and safe, noting that they had occasionally seen the mother and son together. One neighbor recounted the moments leading up to Hoetzlein’s apprehension, emphasizing how isolated he had become after the tragic event.
