The Incident at the Correspondents’ Dinner
Gunfire erupted during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday, leading to chaos as a man rushed into the dining area. This man has been identified by law enforcement as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, hailing from Torrance. According to various sources, including the Associated Press, authorities are currently working to obtain warrants to search locations connected to Allen.
Witness accounts reveal that a hotel security officer spotted the suspect armed with a firearm, which led to a swift response from law enforcement. Amid the uproar, President Donald Trump was evacuated from the stage. While one officer in a bulletproof vest was shot during the incident, details concerning his condition remain uncertain.
Background on the Suspect
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, announced that Allen faces serious charges. He is being charged with two counts of using a firearm and one count of assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon. Reports indicate that he was armed with both a shotgun and a handgun, along with multiple knives. “This individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could,” stated Pirro. However, the motivation behind Allen’s actions has not been disclosed.
Allen’s background paints a picture of a well-educated individual. He graduated from CalTech in 2017 with a degree in mechanical engineering. The university featured his accomplishments in a graduation announcement, showcasing him as a bright student both at his graduation and as a child holding a stuffed bunny. In 2025, he furthered his education at Cal State Dominguez Hills, earning a master’s degree in computer science. Recently, he was named Teacher of the Month in December 2024 at C2 Education, which specializes in academic tutoring and college preparation.
Interestingly, Allen has also been politically engaged; in October 2024, he made a $25 donation to ActBlue, a political action committee that supports Democratic candidates, earmarked for Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign.
As the evening unravelled in Torrance, where it was drizzling near Allen’s residence, police cordoned off the road while FBI agents arrived at the scene. A neighbor confirmed that the household had only moved in six months prior, expressing shock at the violent turn of events. Another resident described the family as friendly and quiet, asserting that they would greet neighbors warmly.
In the wake of this unsettling event, the community is left grappling with the shocking nature of the incident and the violent act associated with a seemingly normal individual.
