A surprising encounter with a bear sent residents of Shadow Hills into a flurry of excitement on Saturday night. The bear was seen pursuing chickens and upending trash cans, captivating those lucky enough to witness the spectacle.
For many neighbors, this was the first time they had seen a bear up close. One local, Cindy Frith-Smith, was particularly enthralled and managed to capture the moment on video, exclaiming, “He’s a pretty big boy! Oh mom, he’s going up the tree!”
Neighborhood Reactions to the Surprise Visitor
Frith-Smith first spotted the bear ambling through her mother’s backyard, leading her to ignore calls to retreat indoors as she wanted to take in the rare sight. The commotion drew the attention of local children, some of whom were completely astonished. Bobby Avakin expressed his disbelief, asking, “How did it just randomly get here?” Meanwhile, Sawyer Laney found the bear to be quite adorable, stating, “I was like, ‘It’s so cute.'”
As the bear wandered through the neighborhood, Los Angeles police were alerted and maintained observation. Their presence intensified when officers retrieved long guns, preparing for any unexpected developments. Luckily, the bear eventually left the area peacefully and has since returned to its natural mountainous habitat.
A Lesson in Wildlife Safety
Residents speculated about the bear’s motives, with Avakin suggesting it may have simply been hungry. This incident serves as a timely reminder for locals to secure food and waste to minimize wildlife attractions in residential areas. Frith-Smith reflected on the episode, saying, “It was just totally unexpected. And it made for a little entertainment.” Experts advise that if a bear is encountered, the safest option is to back away slowly instead of running away.
